The goal of Rummy is simple: arrange all 13 cards in your hand into valid sequences and sets, then declare before your opponents do.

Rummy is a skill-and-memory card game played with two standard decks plus jokers. Each turn you pick one card and discard one card, slowly building groups until your whole hand is valid.

Rules can differ slightly between apps and tables, so always check the in-app rules before you play. Looking for an app overview? See our Yono Rummy guide.

How to play Rummy: step by step

The basic flow of one round of 13-card Rummy.

1
The deal

Each player gets 13 cards. One card starts the open discard pile and the rest form the closed deck.

2
The wild joker

A card is picked at random as the wild joker. All cards of that rank can stand in for any card, along with the printed joker.

3
Draw a card

On your turn, take the top card from either the closed deck or the open discard pile.

4
Discard a card

End your turn by discarding one card face up. You always hold 13 cards at the end of a turn.

5
Build your groups

Arrange cards into sequences and sets. You need at least two sequences, and at least one must be a pure sequence.

6
Declare

When all 13 cards are in valid groups, discard your last card in the finish slot and declare. The first valid declaration wins the round.

Sequences, sets and jokers

The building blocks of every winning hand.

Beginner tips

Small habits that help new players improve.

  • Make your pure sequence first. Without one, you cannot declare.
  • Keep jokers for impure sequences and sets, and don't discard them.
  • Discard high-value cards (10, J, Q, K, A) that don't fit any group.
  • Watch the open pile. It shows what your opponents need and don't need.
  • Don't hold on to a weak hand. A timely drop can limit your points.
  • Check your groups twice before you declare. A wrong declaration costs points.
